The Train first originated in the United Kingdom beginning in the early 1800's. The train in the United States first began in 1827 but by the 1880's it was beginning to connect the Eastern to the Western United States. The steam engine might have decline but Amtrak has emerged as a way of travel in the United States. I received a post-it note recommendation for using Amtrak and was part of my most recent journey from Washington D.C. to Providence RI ro Boston MA.
There is one stretch of this Amtrak ride that showed amazing beauty, great history, and quaint towns. The state of Connecticut often goes overlooked. The Amtrak along the coast was absolutely amazing and seeing it was beautiful. The various stops along the ride included Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven, Old Saybrook, and New London. The final stop before you enter Rhode Island is the town of New London. One thing you'll notice is the obelisk that stands at over 135 feet. It marks the place for an event and fort that occurred during the American Revolution.
In 1781 the American Colonial Army led by Colonial Ledyard faced a large British Army led by Benedict Arnold. The British would break through the main gate after the colonial army caused to repeal. Ledyard would encourage his troops to surrender but the British would ignore this and the entire colonial force would be slaughtered. Ledyard would be killed by his own sword and the victory by England would take over of this Connecticut port.
Today you can visit this historic site as it has the Groton Monument. You can actually still see the area where the fort existed. The Amtrak experience along the coast of Connecticut is one worth checking out and experiencing. #ridingwithkurt #postit #Amtrak #Connecticut
