George Washington was born in Popes Creek , VA in 1732. His early military career began with the British Army with leading the Virginia Regiment during the French and Indian War. After the French and Indian War Washington became elected to the House of Burgesses where he began his career in politics for the colony of Virginia. As tensions great between The Colonies and England Washington began to oppose the action towards the people of Virginia and the colonists.
In 1775 George Washington would become the Commander in Cheif of the Colonial Army and would face one of the strongest military armies of the era. In 1776 his victory at Boston would be and early success but he would be challenge with a loss at New York City. His biggest move came at the Battle of Trenton when he crossed the Delaware River and surprised both British and Hessian troops with a very big victory. He would go on to win The Battle of Princeton but would lose battles at Brandywine and Germantown. By the end of 1777 his leadership would be in question. Over the next four years he would overcome those who questioned him with key and final victory at Yorktown in 1781. In 1789 he would be elected as the first President of the United States. He would lead the United States through the early establishment as a country. In 1797 he would finally step down from leadership and would spend his remaining years at his in Mount Vernon. On December 14, 1799 at age 67 he would pass and be buried at his beloved property.
Today the memory of George Washington can be found throughout the city of Washington D.C. The Washington Monument is part of his memory and sits right in the middle of the National Mall. It is one of the tallest structures in Washington D.C. that sits at over 555 feet tall. Construction was completed in 1884 after several delays and nearly 40 years later.
Today you can see the monument at the mall and enter it as well. It is open seven days a week from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. To get to the top you need to purchase a ticket in advance which is $1.00. This Monument is a must when visiting Washington D.C. and the memory of the work of George Washington. This is one part of Washington D.C. and one area that was recommended to me by post it note. #ridingwithkurt #postit
