Oxford, MS!!!
The Southern States have so many great cities to explore. One these cities may be in a unlikely state that may not be on your radar. It is a city that I have traveling to that began nearly three years ago that I had and still have plenty of great post it note recommendations for.
Oxford, MS is a place with a deep history, a great food scene, a historic college, a game day experience, and the home of a well known author. In 1832 the city was founded where the land was bought from the Chickasaw Indians. The University of Mississippi would be founded in 1848. In 1861 the entire student body would enlists for the Confederacy for the Company A of the 11th Mississippi Infantry. This group of young soldiers would fight in significant battles but disaster would arise as nearly the entire army was wiped out at the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1864 the Union Army would arrive in Oxford and burn down the city.
Today the city of Oxford is a quaint town with plenty of great restaurants and shops. The area known as the square is the centerpiece to the city. There are great dining experiences throughout the city including Saint Leo, Ajax Diner, Big Bad Breakfast, City Grocery, McKewen's, and other fantastic stops. In the square there is a statue of William Faulkner who is an author that wrote on various southern tales. For an amazing game day experience for Ole Miss Football there is The Grove that offers an extraordinary Tail Gate experience. Throughout the square there are plenty of neat book stores that offer some current and historic books.
Oxford, MS is one city that you can visit year round. For hotels I have stayed at Home 2 Suites by Hilton, but for game days I generally stayed in Oxford, MS which is only 40 minutes away.
