Over the last four years there is one state that I have been to over the last three years. It is a state out west that offers exceptional hiking, skiing, fly fishing, awesome concert venues, sports, and history. There are three places that offer exceptional history to this state one for a individual, one for the geographical phenomenon, and the other for the Native Americans. All three of these areas were also recommended to me by post it note.
Colorado is an amazing state and the history of the state is absolutely fascinating. Just outside of Boulder is a great museum for a great individual that helped the exploration out west with the US Army as a scout. His knowledge of the area helped create ways for the development of not only Colorado but for the entire western states. Buffalo Bill is a legend of the American West and after his service for the United States he transitioned into what became known as the Buffalo Bill's Wild West which included both Cowboys and Native Americans. The tour would last for thirty years and would span the globe. Today the legacy of William Cody can be found outside the city of Golden, CO. It sits on top of the mountain with The Buffalo Bill Museum. There are plenty of great artifacts and pieces about the life of Bill Cody. The admission is only ten dollars and is well worth it. On the grounds you can pay respect to Wild Bill where he and his wife are buried there.
The next stop lies in the Southeastern corner of Colorado and it is quite impressive. The Great Sand Dunes is a historical place that has a massive sand dunes that has been growing in size since its creation over a couple thousand years ago. There is a great visitor center which offers very detailed information about the creation of the area. There is a separate area for parking where you can walk out to the dunes and take in the impressive views.
In the Southwestern corner of Colorado there is an area that was settled by the Navajo over a 1000 years ago. It became a area that was part of a vast trade route that stretched from South America to Colorado. Today Mesa Verde National Park offers a very informative visitor center at the entrance of the park with a great gift shop. The park is massive with various stops to view the various pits and dwellings. The dwellings are quite impressive and each one offers information about each location.
Each of these areas can be visited any time of year but found that late May and early June is a good time of year to visit. Make sure you purchase the Annual National Park Pass because after three National Parks it pays for itself. For hotels in Denver I generally stay in Denver Tech at Hyatt House or Hyatt Place. For dining options on this journey check out Beau Jo's Pizza, Walter 303, El Moro, or the Funky Bear. You can't go wrong with these historical stops in Colorado. #ridingwithkurt #postit #colorado #history
