The city of San Antonio has plenty of great historical stops. On such place is right next to the hotel that I was staying at that date backs to the early 1700's. A week prior to my trip to San Antonio a individual who was from the area recommended to me on a post it note this historical stop.
The San Fernando Cathedral is located in the Plaza de Las Islas Canaries area of San Antonio. The church was founded in March 9, 1731, by 16 families who migrated to the area from the Canary Islands at the invitation of the Spanish King Felipe the V. The families were able to make contact with local natives and a friar who help establish themselves in the area after a 1200-mile journey from the Canary Islands and to the area what is known as San Antonio. The church served as the main church to the city for over 281 years and for 95 years the church was there for all religions. Today the church is still in use and offers daily mass. The architecture is absolutely beautiful on the outside and inside. Additionally, the church serves as the tomb for those that were lost at the Alamo and there is a marker that shows where the bodies are held as you enter the cathedral. In the evening the church is lighted up in its magnificence that can be seen from the entire area. There is a gift shop and times you can visit the cathedral vary.
For dining options near the Cathedral there is Mi Tierra and Pinkertons. There is access to the River Walk across from it. Also, next to the Cathedral in front of the Courthouse there are bronze statues commemorating the original sixteen families. The AC Hotel is right across from the Cathedral. Add a stop at the San Fernando Cathedral on your next visit to San Antonio. #ridingwithkurt #delta #postit
