In 2001 I moved to Rhode Island unsure what my future would hold. Twenty five years later I would return to this state and a city that I worked in. It is a very historical city that is located in Southern Rhode Island. It is also a town that I received a post-it note for.
Newport, RI was founded in 1632 after three individuals led a group who where English colonists breaking away from their Portsmoth settlement. Over the next two years Newport would be scene as a haven for all religions. During the American Revolution it would be occupied by both British and Hessian troops from 1776 to 1779. In 1778 it would be a decisive area for the Battle of Rhode Island between the first joint offensive with colonial and French soldiers versus the British Army. The battle would end in a stalemate but it was considered the beginning of the end for the British in Newport. By 1780 the British would abandon the city and the French Army would take over with Rochambeau which would become a staging area for the Battle of Yorktown. By 1784 the city of Newport would be incorporated as a city and would become a seaport for shipping.
Today the cities vibrant history still exists with some great shops, restaurants, and historical places. A few dining options include 22 Bowen's, The Black Pearl, The Landing, and more. There are several water taxis along the harbor to you to various stops including Fort Adams. Fort Adams was built in 1799 but not established until 1857 as part of the coastal defense system which today serves a state park and home to the Newport Jazz Festival. There is also the Newport Chowder Festival which occurs on Bowen's Wharf every May. For Hotels there is Castle Hill, The Marriott Newport, Newport Harbour Island Resort, and Oceancliff Hotel plus other stays.
There is so much to see in the downtown area of Newport, RI. I found late June a great time of year to visit. Add a stop to Newport when visiting Rhode Island because it is a true hidden gem. #ridingwithkurt #postit #newportri
