The other day, I provided a ride to a up and coming country artist named Elizabeth Covington. She is originally from the Charleston, SC area. We chatted about her hometown and informed her that I had moved back to Nashville 9 and a half years ago to the Nashville area. There are many fond memories about Charleston that I have, but since doing Uber, I have gathered plenty of post-it notes for destinations back in the low country,
There is one island that lies south of the city of Charleston that offers plenty of great history, food, sights, and culture. John's Island is an island that was founded on agriculture and the life of this area of South Carolina. The island was at one point the top producer of tomatoes in the entire United States, and many of the northern states relied on the agriculture of John's Island. Today, there are a couple of stops that I remember that are refliective of the culture of John's Island.
Along Main Road on John's Island, there is a dining experience that offers the history of the foods of the island with the sea and the farm. The Stono Market, aka Tomato Shed Cafe, is a stop that offers the incredible food of the surrounding island and the dishes that only at this market you can find. The menu is everything southern, and the crab cakes are incredible. The squash casserole is fantastic, and the rest of the menu will offer a dining experience that is unforgettable. Plus, they have their own farm, fishing, and crab boats that offer a true farm and sea table experience that will not leave you disappointed.
A few other stops near the Stono Market include the Angel Oak Tree, which is the largest Oak Tree in the United States. Beachwalker was a beach near Kiawah that found less crowded at the time and incredible views of the Atlantic. Charleston Tea Plantation is located on Wadmalaw, which offers tours and the history of tea production in the Charleston Area.
The low country on John's Island offers so much to see and do. It is a short distance from Charleston. Plus, the Sanctuary Hotel is nearby for hotel experience, unlike anything else. Add a stop to John's Isalnd on your next visit to South Carolina. #ridingwithkurt
