Indian Trails In New Mexico and Colorado

The United States was originally home to various Native American groups and tribes. The other day, I was chatting with an individual who I provided a ride to about the various trade routes that extended from South America to North America. On my recent trip a couple of months ago, I talked to a park ranger at Mesa Verde National Park who educated me on these trade routes. Today, who can find remnants of this trade route in New Mexico and Colorado.

Outside of Albuquerque, NM is a place that was recommended to me by post-it note on my first post-it note trip to Nevada and New Mexico. The Petroglyph National Monument is a fascinating place that offers etchings from the Native Americans on the black lava rock. The etchings are about what the tribes of the area saw and wanted to communicate with others in the area. One etching that stood out was an etching of a Macaw that indicated where there was some trade route from Central America to New Mexico. Petroglyph offers various hiking and visitor centers as well.

Four and a half hours north of Petroglyph is Mesa Verde National Park. This is one stop to add when looking for Native American history in the western United States. The pits and dwellings are fascinating and date back to over 1000 years. The park offers a visitor center, the Far View Restaurant for dining, and plenty of stops in the park to check out the various stops.

Both places are exceptional and provide an appreciation for Native American history, as well as early American history. Look at staying at either Santa Fe or Albuquerque, NM, for visiting Petroglyph. For Mesa Verde, look at staying in Durango, CO. Incredible history, tremendous experiences, and great food near both places you can't go wrong with on this visit to New Mexico and Colorado. #ridingwithkurt
