During the American Civil War Tennessee was the last state to secede from the Union. Nashville became a focal point because the Union Army realized if they could take the city they would split the eastern and western campaigns. In 1862 the Union Army took back the city splitting the Confederate Army. The Union Army realizing the value of the city set up an immense fortification around Nashville to protect the area from what they would consider a battle the could alter the Civil War. On December 15 - 16, 1864 the Confederate Army converged on the city and a two immense battle would occur with eventually the Union Army defeating the Confederate Army.
Today there are areas that you can still see the history of the American Civil War throughout the Music City. One such place is a stop that I often point out to those that I provide rides to. It is located just 8 to 10 minutes south of downtown. Fort Negley was part of the defensive barrier for the Union Army and was used during the battle. Today there is a Visitor Center and a self guided tour to the top of the fort. I have always enjoyed the walks to the top and gazing at the various information that illustrates the history of the fort and the area of Nashville during the Civil War. Additionally, the views from the top of the fort are incredible and have great views of the Nashville skyline. Plus you get an idea how vast the Battle of Nashville was in 1864. It is also the largest in land stone fort built during the American Civil War. The walking path is open seven days a week, where as the visitor center is limited during the winter with it being open Tuesday through Friday from Noon until 4:00 pm and on Sundays from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm.
For dining near the fort that has been recommended to me by post it note check out Cledis Burger, Dicey's Pizza, Hattie B's, Smiling Elephant, and Cilantro Mexican Grill. There is parking available by the fort that is free. If you are looking for a great historical stop in Nashville head to Fort Negley located at 1100 Fort Negley Blvd. #ridingwithkurt
