Immigration to America from China began as early as 1785 when three individuals settled in Baltimore. The largest influx of Chinese immigrants to the United States began in 1848 in California with the Gold Rush. They would offer food tents to the miners in and would call this area of America the Mountain of Gold. During the expansion of the railroad in the 1860's they would be the backbone to laying track to connect the western to the eastern United States.
In Washington D.C. there is an area that became established by the Chinese immigrants. Chinatown which was created in 1931 between 5th and 8th Street NW. The entrance has a large arch that you enter called the Friendship Arch that was built in 1986 that offered a connection to the city of Washington D.C. and Beijing, China. The 48 tall structure stretches across 7th Street and H Street. After the Friendship Gate you will find plenty of Chinese restaurants, shops, and other parts to reflect the Chinese culture here. Most of the restaurants offer both lunch and dinner options. Some of the restaurants include Nan Xing Soup Dumplings, Yard House, Reren Lamen Bar, Chili Bistro, and many more.
Chinatown in Washington D.C. and located just East of the White House. This area offers great cultural history and experience with the Chinese Americans. This was part of my post it note journey to Washington D.C. and one that I enjoyed as you will when visiting. #ridingwithkurt #postit #chinatowndc
