Just west of the city of Washington D.C. lies the city of Arlington, Virginia. It's just a ten to fifteen minute metro ride from the heart of Washington D.C. It is home to one of the most moving stops in the area and part of my most recent post-it note trip to Washington D.C.
The Arlington National Cemetery was established in 1864 after the Union confiscated the land that once belonged to Ulysses S. Grant. It was founded as a ste for the casualties of the American Civil War. Over time the area would grow for those to be buried who served our country during war and peace time. There are over 400,000 individuals buried here that are representative of every war and battle that America has ever been involved in. On May 13, 1864 the first burial would occur with Private William Christman. Since then there have been many burials and recognition that served the American military through The American Civil War until today. As you walk through Arlington Cemetery you'll notice not only all the tombstones but the various dates of their lives. There is also small bronze statues that recognize various units and their times of service. One true experience is at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier which was established in 1921 and has been under guard by the military since 1937. Each hour there is the changing of the gaurd where they offer respect to the fallen and go through a series of inspections with the soldiers. Right next to there is John F. Kennedy gravesite with the eternal flame which also has several of his famous quotes on the permanent memorial.
Arlington National Cemetery offers various tours throughout the entire site. There is museum and gift shop at the entrance of the Cemetery. Their hours are from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm daily. This is one place to add when visiting Washington D.C. add a stop to Arlington National Cemetery. #ridingwithkurt #postit #arlingtonnationalcemetery
