If you are looking for an immaculate drive through Colorado, the drive from The Great Sand Dunes National Park to Durango is awesome. The drive is about three hours and fifteen minutes, and the drive allows you to see the various geographic features that southern Colorado has to offer.
From the Great Sand Dunes National Park, you'll take Highway 150 South to Highway Lane 6. When you get to Mosca, Colorado turn right and take Highway 17 when you get to Hooper, Colorado turns left and drives along Highway 112. The geography begins to change through this drive. At the end of Highway 112 is Highway 160 in Delnorte, Colorado. Take a moment before you head on to take in the views of the Rio Grand River. This is where you begin entering the Rio Grand National Forest. This stretch of highway offers spectacular views of mountains, valleys, and everything that Southeastern Colorado has to offer. The one stop you'll want to make is at the Continental Divide at Wolf Creek Pass. This area separates the rivers that flow east and west of the Rocky Mountains. The elevation is over 10,000 feet, and their are ski slopes nearby. There is an incredible valley view at the Wolf Creek Valley Overlook. Stop here to get some epic pics of the valley. From there, you'll pass through the quaint town of Pagosa Springs that offers great dining and shopping in the heart of the Rockies. After Pagosa Springs, you have the last incredible drive to Durango.
This journey was part of my previous post-it note travels with The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Durango, Colorado. The drive was incredible and alliw yourself time to enjoy this road trip. The hotel of choice to begin this road trip was the Hyatt Place Denver Tech. The hotel was excellent with great rooms, reasonably priced, and breakfast was included. Add this road trip next time you're looking to explore southern Colorado. #ridingwithkurt
